After the Jets first preseason game of the year went into the books, there were some things that was really impressive as well as things that were concerning. The first team offense only played one series but looked sharp on some levels starting with the offense led by second year quarterback Sam Darnold. Despite the almost interception on the opening drive, Darnold led the offense to a touchdown on the opening drive on a pick route by new Jet Jamison Crowder. The first team defense had a strong showcase as well by forcing a three and out, in Quinnen Williams debut he blown up a double team, forced a holding penalty, and had a tackle for loss. Frankie Luvu was also able to force a fumble on the Giants as well and that was the focus for this defense. The point of concern is the lack of depth at corner, offensive line, and a pass rush as the secondary got torched by the Giants passing game. Special teams was the teams strong suit last year but may take a step back if they can't find a good kicker to replace Chandler Catanzaro who had a weak performance last night. With all that being I decided to give a rundown on who I believe will make the final 53 man roster after last nights game.
QB: Sam Darnold, Trevor Siemian.
This one is easy because we know who the starting quarterback is and Siemian had the most reps yesterday. Webb might be back on the practice squad just as insurance in case one of them gets hurt, but I don't see them keeping three quarterbacks.
RB: Le'veon Bell, Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell.
I think that the third running back spot might be the most competitive between McGuire and Powell but at the end of the day, Powell has the most experience which would give him the advantage to take that third string spot.
WR: Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder, Quincy Enunwa, Josh Bellamy, Deontay Burnett, Greg Dortch.
Greg Dortch and Tim White have been turning heads at Jets camp but after last nights game, Dortch took the lead for the final receiver spot. White will probably be on the practice squad if he doesn't make the final cut.
TE: Ryan Griffin, Daniel Brown, Trevor Wesco.
With the suspension to Chris Herndon for the first four games, this is a good opportunity for these three to make a serious case as to why they deserve to be on the active roster. Both Wesco and Brown are big targets for Darnold and could be fill Herndon's shoes while he is facing that suspension.
OL: Beachum, Osmele, Kalil, Winters, Shell, Edoga, Compton, Harrison, Anderson, Lewis
I liked what Anderson did yesterday and believe that he will take a step up as the second string center.
Defense:
DE: Leonard Williams, Nathan Shepherd
DL: Steve McLendon, Quinnen Williams
DL: Henry Anderson, Kaufusi.
OLB: Brandon Copeland, Langi, Polite
ILB: CJ Mosley, Neville Hewitt, Anthony Wint
ILB: Avery Williamson, Blake Cashman.
OLB: Jordan Jenkins, Frankie Luvu, Terry Basham
CB: Trumaine Johnson, Kyron Brown, Parry Nickerson, Arthur Maulet
CB: Darryl Roberts, Brian Poole
SS: Jamal Adams, Brandon Bryant
FS: Doug Middleton, Rontez Miles
P: Lachlan Edwards
K: Taylor Bertolet
I believe that Joe Douglas will continue to add on to the secondary whether he waits for players to be cut or make a trade to generate some depth for the secondary. Look for them to add some pass rush as well as finding some corners as well because they still need to find someone who can get to the quarterback.
