NBA loses a Star in the Making in Kristaps Porzingis for the Season

The New York Knicks have been having a renaissance of a season. While below .500 with a record of 23-32 they were seemingly a team on the rise with young talent where it was needed and veteran leadership throughout the lineup. While also staying relevant in social media with a budding star in Kristaps Porzingis, or as some came to know him the U-Knick-orn for his rare combination of size, strength, ball handling, shooting and defensive ability.

In what turned into a blow out loss to the Greek Freak, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the Milwaukee Bucks, the Knicks not only lost the game but lost their best player in years for the remainder of the season. Early in the second quarter, Porzingis elevated for a strong successful dunk that would be his last of the year as his left knee buckled. What does this mean for the Knicks throughout the rest of the season?

Well they still have some talent in their starting 5. Enes Kanter had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Tim Hardaway Jr. has had some big performances this year, and at times so has Courtney Lee. The main question will be can the streaky back up to Porzingis Michael Beasley be the player the Knicks need to make a playoff push.

During a stretch of games where Beasley was the starter for an injured Porzingis, he led the Knicks to win 4-5 while scoring a high of 32 points in that stretch. He has always been instant offense for any team. However, his defense has always been questionable and his attitude has been known to get him into trouble.

The Knicks currently are the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference and not too outside of the Playoffs. That being said they would need to perform well this last chunk of the season while hoping the 76ers, Pistons, and Hornets fall from graces. However, you can assume with the recently acquired Blake Griffin the Pistons should be good enough to get over the hump and into the post season.

For my money the Knicks are a tough bet the rest of the season. But who knows, sometimes an injury to a star player results in something miraculous. Just look at the Interstate of Green home team Philadelphia Eagles. Professional Sports can be cut throat but it’s also quite inspiring the way teams can employ a next man up mentality.
