With week one in the books and a loss to division rival, Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets have a tough task this week against the Oakland Raiders. However, head coach Todd Bowles has yet to name the back up quarterback to Josh McCown.
Bryce Petty came out saying this week, "I say, I'm the No. 1," and later added, "You've got to prepare just like the starter." Josh McCown is the starting quarterback for the Jets at this point but Bowles has continued to keep his thoughts about the backup position to himself.
In the third preseason game versus the New York Giants, Bryce Petty made a strong case for himself. Coming off the bench to lead the Jets to a come-from-behind victory. Petty completed 15 of his 18 pass attempts and threw for 250 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Christian Hackenberg should have been out of the running for the backup quarterback job at that point.
Petty suffered an injury to his left knee that kept him from playing in the last preseason game and the season opener. This allowed Christian Hackenberg to be the backup quarterback for Josh McCown. Last year the Jets went 1-3 with Petty as the starter but if or when the third year quarterback gets another shot under center, he'll be ready. Petty will be prepared for his second chance.
