With OTAs wrapping up a few weeks ago, it's time to take a look at the quarterbacks on the Jets roster: Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. All three of the quarterbacks took part in organized team activities and all got equal reps throwing to receivers covered by defenders. Josh McCown reportedly looked the sharpest of the three and is expected to have a leg up on Hackenberg and Petty due to the fact that he is the lone quarterback with experience in the west coast offense. It seems likely that McCown will be the starting quarterback come training camp and on Opening Day. But who knows how long his reign as starting quarterback will last. Jets fans are hoping Josh McCown isn't another Ryan Fitzpatrick. Who threw 17 interceptions in 14 games and didn't even average 200 yards passing a game in the 2016 season. Jets fans aren't asking McCown to be this great free agent signee who will make the Jets a contender in the AFC. The Jets are in rebuilding mode, so it's going to take a few years before they are true contenders, but what fans are asking for is for consistency from either of the 3 quarterbacks. At some point during the upcoming season the Jets would like to get a look at their 2016 second round pick, Christian Hackenberg. Hackenberg's biggest issue is accuracy. He has already hit two reporters standing on the sideline with over thrown balls. When he misses, he really misses which gets him in trouble. Hackenberg reportedly does look better than he did as a rookie and does show glimpses of hope. But as of now I expect him to be McCowns's backup. As for Bryce Petty, he's in his third season in the NFL and Jets are waiting for him to make that next step as a quarterback the team can lean on. We saw a glimpse of him last year and in six games relieving Ryan Fitzpatrick he threw 809 yards, with 3 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Petty still has a ways to go before Todd Bowles can pass the starting quarterback torch to him. As of now, I'd expect Bryce petty to open the season as the third string quarterback behind both McCown and Hackenberg. Hackenberg and Petty are both learning a new offense. McCown has experience in it, and is only here for insurance. The Jets would love for Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty to cement themselves as a franchise quarterback.
